Mackay is located on the Central coast of Queensland halfway between Brisbane and Cairns. Mackay is a thriving tropical city with a population of just over 100,000 and is the main port for the Coal Mining Industry of the Bowen Basin.
Just off the coast of Mackay is Brampton Island the southern most island of the Whitsundays, to the North is Airlie Beach the Gateway to the Whitsunday passage, just to the west of Mackay is the largest sugar growing region in Australia and further west is the largest coal mining region in Queensland the Bowen Basin. Just to the South is Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminals the 2nd largest coal handling terminal in the world. The Mackay Harbour and Port also exports a lot of grain, sugar and wheat off shore and also has fuel terminals for two of the biggest fuel companies in the world BP and Caltex.
The main industry in Mackay is the Mining Services and Sugar farming services sector. During peak season May - October the population swells with transient workers required to operate the mines and the sugar farms to the West of the city. The Mackay Harbour and Port facility is a secondary industry but it does boast one of the largest port handling facilities in Queensland.
Mackay is often referred to as the heart of Queensland with lots of natural attractions and its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Isles, Finch Hatton Gorge and the Eungella rainforest region, it is gaining a burgeoning reputation and lots of tourists are visiting the region thanks largely to the Mackay Tourism efforts
